KLARSKIN x SUMMER DAWN MILLER
KlarSkin x Summer Dawn Miller
Actor + Freelancer
When I moved to New York I worked in luxury retail whilst going to acting school. I loved it. I love fashion, I loved my clients, I love dressing people. I love talking to people who I don't know. During that time, I studied at a theatre. I was totally bewitched from my first class. I was absolutely meant to be there, in that particular time during those months.
I moved almost three years ago. My best friend Avery had just moved to the Upper West Side and I had never been to New York before. I was 21. I visited once, fell in love, and had to live here.
Now that I look back the things that I did and put myself through I can't believe it. I stayed with people I had never met! I was so serious about New York, I knew that I had to get here.
I'm still madly in love with New York. I love walking everywhere. I hope that I stay here for a long, long time.
I'm home a lot. I have lots of little secret projects going on. I write something everyday. I read three times a week. I've been working on something special. It's something that I found myself needing for years and years and then decided I'll just make it myself. I'm freelancing for a couple brands as well. I'm lucky, I've been working for really great, young brands and with extremely generous and thoughtful people. It wasn't always that way. When I first moved to New York I feel like everyone was mean at work, all my bosses were unjust, etc haha. So I feel really lucky to be where I am right now.
I don't schedule myself for anything in the morning. I like to take my mornings slow. But if I have a early meeting or appointment I get right up and into the shower.
Then I do my skincare and drink my Radiance Powder before eating. I'll eat breakfast while my skincare soaks in. Then I do my makeup. I just wear this tinted sunscreen from Supergoop, Glossier concealer, Glossier lash slick, and brow gel. I'm into highlighter lately, no blush. That's all. Takes 5 minutes.
For my hair I just wear my bedhead. I spritz dry shampoo throughout and that's it.
My skin has changed since taking the Radiance Powder. Even when I had good skin days I always felt like my skin was missing something. I feel like the Powder has helped my skin heal. I'm brighter, more glowy, and have more color.
I'm not really a novel person. I'm usually reading nonfiction or a play. The Invention of Nature is a book I talk about all the time on my Instagram Stories and The Humans, Intimacy and Other Plays by Thomas Bradshaw, Seascapes with Sharks and Dance are plays I come back to all the time. This summer I read a lot of true crime. You All Grow Up And Leave Me, The Stranger Beside Me, Going Clear, and In Cold Blood are titles that stick out to me. Next I'm reading Helter Skelter.
I love every book I read. I loved A Little Life. I had heard about its release and how it would win book of the year, so I called ahead at my bookstore in my hometown and placed an order for it. I have 2 copies and I buy them for gifts all the time - I can't think of a better gift than a book. Especially when you write a little note for them on the inside cover, I think that's the most romantic thing in the world. When I was little I remember I would look through all my mom's old books and read the little messages and remember trying to decipher cursive.
A Life by Italo Svevo is one of the most beautiful books I read this year. I realize I read a lot of Italian love stories this year. My Brilliant Friend is another one.
I look up to my mom. She was always the most incredible example for me. She knows everything and is years ahead of everyone. The things my mom was saying about food, factory farming, and climate change 20 years ago people are just catching on to now. My mom is a brilliant biologist. She's extremely well read too.
Finally you asked about what I see for myself in the future. I just want to be a working actor. It doesn't matter where or if it means I'm in Hollywood or in a theatre.
When I was young, I was a total disaster in school. I hated it every minute. I just remember feeling tired all the time. I have chronic pain and my first memories of the pain starting where in high school. My favorite subject in school was history. I studied middle eastern history in college and took Arabic. I love language. I can say a couple of things in French, Spanish, I can read and write Hebrew, and I can count to ten in Korean. I want to be able to say hello in 50 languages.
For work now I freelance, and I'm in pre-production for a show. I'm excited for the future and for whats to come!
